DBS Checks for Sports Clubs and Sports CoachesÂ
Sport plays an important role in many people’s lives, whether it’s watching from the sidelines, scoring the winning try or ensuring that the players’ wellbeing and safety is taken care of. Â
Sports clubs and coaches are critically important in sports development but there are many different sports, with many different settings – how is it possible to ensure safeguarding is followed as standard?Â
Some sports clubs operate from a centralised location, with grounds and a clubhouse. Sports, such as hockey, cricket and football, usually work in this way.Â
There are other sports, for example tennis or swimming, that may involve a coach travelling to the sports person. This may be especially true of non-team sports.Â
Other sports happen outside of the traditional sports club set up, with sports, like skiing and kayaking, taking place in what may be quite remote locations.Â
Ensuring that safeguarding is in operation for both sports clubs and sports coaches will require a solid framework of safeguarding policies and procedures to be put in place. At the very heart of this framework is the DBS check.   Â
Where do I get a DBS from?Â
This will depend on the sport. For larger sports, such as rugby, hockey and football, you will be informed by your regulatory body to secure a FA DBS or an RFU DBS. For smaller sports clubs or more niche activities, you may have to navigate the DBS process within the club.Â
At MyVetting, we can deliver online Basic, Standard and Enhanced DBS checks quickly and affordably through our online DBS portal. Â
What DBS check do I need for sport?Â
The level of DBS check required in sport depends on the role that you will be playing within the club. You may be working only with children and require an Enhanced DBS check.
Your regulatory body may request that all volunteers, coaching and non-coaching, undertake an Enhanced DBS check because of the access to children and vulnerable adults. Â
Who needs a sports DBS?Â
When considering who needs a DBS check, it is important to note that DBS checks are only available to those over the age of 16.Â
Do I need an Enhanced DBS in a sports club?Â
This will depend on who you are working with, where, and how often. Â
Enhanced DBS checks are often required for individuals working or volunteering within a particular establishment, like a school or a nursery. A sports coach attached to a setting like this will be eligible for an Enhanced DBS check, whether they are part of a wide club. Â
If the club or sports coaching is not taking place in one of the listed establishments, but within somewhere else, like a sports club or a youth club setting, it will depend on the activity the individual is engaged in.Â
What is Regulated Activity in Sport?Â
Sports coaches engaging in regulated activity will be eligible for an enhanced DBS check.
In this regard, regulated activity with children means coaching, teaching and training children, supervising children and/or driving a vehicle purely for children will be eligible for an Enhanced DBS check with a check against the children’s barred list. Â
If the sports coach or volunteer is being supervised at all times by a member of staff that is engaging in regulated activity, then the coach or volunteer is not considered to be engaged in regulated activity themselves and may not be eligible for the check against the children’s barred list.

Basic DBS Checks in Sport Clubs:Â
Not all roles within sports clubs require Enhanced DBS checks or necessitate a check against the Children’s Barred list. Roles that do not require higher level DBS checks may still be eligible for staff members that do not have direct contact with children or vulnerable adults.
These roles include cleaning and catering staff, as well as administrators and groundskeepers. Â
Basic DBS checks are the lowest level of DBS check available and review convictions considered unspent under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.Â
