DBS Checks For Security CompaniesÂ
Do You Need A DBS Check to be a Security Staff?Â
When working in the security industry, it’s key to engender trust and reliability with the public and the people that you are working with and for. All roles across security have a level of responsibility and it is likely a DBS check is required. Â
What type of DBS do Security Staff require? Â
There are a wide range of roles and responsibilities across the security sector. The Security Industry Authority (SIA) is the regulatory body for the security industry and provides a framework for the private security industry. Certain roles within the industry require licences that are issued by the SIA.Â
Licences are issued upon registration with the SIA. As part of this process, the SIA will undertake a Standard DBS check through the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). Security staff, such as security guards, require a Standard DBS check, under the terms of the 1974 Rehabilitation of Offenders Act, and particular roles may even require an Enhanced DBS check. Â
What is a Standard DBS check for Security Staff?Â
Carried out by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), Standard checks are the middle level of DBS check in the UK. Â
A Standard DBS check shows details of both spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands and warnings that are held on the Police National Computer.Â
Do all security roles require an SIA licence?Â
No, not all security roles require an SIA licence with DBS Check. Only roles that involve ‘licensable activity’ or can be categorised as ‘contract for services’ will require a licence.
What does ‘licensable activity’ mean?  Â
Licensable activities include manned guarding responsibilities, such as security guard or secure transit guard, and key holding responsibilities. Â
What does ‘contract for services’ mean?Â
‘Contract for services’ means that you supply your services to an external organisation, either by yourself or your employer. Â
What security roles do not require you to apply for an SIA licence? Â
Not all positions within the security industry require an SIA licence, including unpaid and unrewarded volunteers, event staff that can only check tickets and cannot prevent entry, and venue-employed staff working at certified sports grounds in England and Wales.  Â
Potentially, in place of an SIA licence, staff in these roles will be requested by their employers to undertake a Basic DBS check. There will also be circumstances in which security companies require security staff to undergo Enhanced DBS checks with or without Barred List checks. However, individual employers will advise as required. Â
Can I run a Standard DBS check on myself?Â
No, you cannot request a Standard DBS check on yourself. You will need a registered professional body or employer to request a DBS check for you through our system. It’s important that you complete any actions requested quickly so that it won’t delay your DBS application. You will be asked to supply forms of personal identification. Traditionally, this used to require a face-to-face meeting, but MyVetting’s streamlined online system means you can upload your evidence remotely.Â
How long does DBS take?Â
Requesting DBS checks for individuals that require a Security Staff DBS check is quick and simple. Â
Register in seconds and send check alerts directly to the applicant. They’ll be alerted instantly and can begin the check process straight away. Don’t worry – if they’re busy and forget to start their check, we’ll send them a text reminder after 24 and 48 hours. Â
When your employees upload their proof of identity, their reports will be returned within 5-10 days.  Â
