DBS Checks for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises
DBS Checks for a Lifestyle Business
AÂ lifestyle business is a business that has been created, set up and run by its founder with the key objective of living a certain lifestyle. Lifestyle businesses can include creative options, like photography, pottery or writing, alongside health and beauty businesses, such as beautician, personal trainer and nail technician.
DBS Check for a Personal Trainer? Â
When you enrol on a personal trainer course, you may not be asked to complete a DBS check and you will be able to qualify as a personal trainer (PT) without a criminal record check. However, when you decide how you want to operate as a personal trainer, it might be time to consider a DBS check.   Â
What is a DBS check for a Personal Trainer? Â
A DBS check for a personal trainer is the same as for any individual undertaking a DBS. A DBS check is a Disclosure and Barring Service Check which employers may have to request for employees. Some activities require a DBS check if the role involves working with vulnerable people.
If you were operating as a personal trainer as part of a larger organisation, you may be required to complete a Basic or Enhanced DBS check. As a self-employed Personal Trainer, you might like to undertake a Basic DBS check on yourself.   Â
There are three main types of DBS Checks:Â Â Â
Basic check – shows cautions and convictions that are unspent.   Â
Standard check – shows details of both spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands and warnings that are held on the Police National Computer. Â
Enhanced check – shows the same as a standard check as well as any information held by local authorities that’s considered relevant.  Â
An enhanced check with barred lists also includes a check against the Children’s and/or Adult’s Barred lists, which shows individuals that have been barred from working with vulnerable people.  Â
If you are employed by a large gym or fitness brand, your employer may request a standard DBS check or enhanced check if you will be a personal trainer for kids or work with vulnerable adults.  Â
DBS Checks For Holistic Practitioners Â
Holistic care is the care of the many different types of health that a person has. Encompassing body, mind and soul, holistic care considers the physical body, the emotional self and a person’s spirituality.
Examples of holistic practitioners include yoga teachers, massage therapists, reiki practitioners, acupuncturists and hypnotherapists.  Â
Do Holistic Practitioners need a DBS Check? Â
While traditional healthcare practitioners, like doctors and nursing staff, will require Enhanced DBS checks, holistic practitioners aren’t as clear cut when it comes to DBS checks.   Â
Any practitioner can apply for a Basic DBS check on themselves. However, an Enhanced DBS check can only be requested by an employer or a professional body.
For holistic practitioners, this means that you may be able to apply for an Enhanced DBS check through a professional or registered body. Â
This will enable any registered holistic practitioner to secure an Enhanced DBS check which will enable them to work with vulnerable adults and children. Â
For holistic professionals, such as aromatherapists and massage therapists, working with the NHS, it is probable that the NHS will require you to undergo an Enhanced DBS check.  Â
DBS Checks for Lifeguards Â
To work as a lifeguard in the UK requires that you undergo a DBS check. In particular, lifeguards are required to undergo Enhanced DBS checks as lifeguards work directly and closely with members of the public.  Â
What is an Enhanced DBS check for lifeguards? Â
An Enhanced DBS check shows details of both spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, warnings that are held on the Police National Computer and any information held by local police that’s considered relevant. Â
DBS Checks for Hairdressers Â
Disclosure and Barring Checks (DBS Checks) are required for many professionals across multiple sectors. However, not every position is eligible for a DBS check.  Â
There are three different levels of DBS Check – Basic, Standard and Enhanced.  Â
Basic DBS check – unspent cautions and convictions.   Â
Standard DBS check – both spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands and warnings that are held on the Police National Computer. Â
Enhanced DBS check – both spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, warnings held on the Police National Computer and any information held by local police that’s considered relevant. Â
Do hairdressers need a DBS? Â
Hairdressers are not usually eligible for a Standard or Enhanced DBS check, although there may be exceptions.  Â
Hairdressers working with children Â
Hairdressers working with children are typically not eligible for an Enhanced Check as children tend to be accompanied by a parent or carer.
A child aged under 18 and visiting the salon without a parent or carer will still not be eligible for a Standard or Enhanced DBS check as they are still in the care of the parent or guardian, even though they may not be present.Â
Mobile Hairdressers Â
All hairdressers and salon staff are eligible for a Basic DBS check and this can be self-requested or requested by an employer.
This also means that mobile hairdressers that are self-employed and work with members of the general public, either in their own home or in their clients’ homes, can also have a DBS check on themselves.   Â
Care Home Hairdressers Â
Hairdressers that work in care homes, both for the elderly and vulnerable children and adults, may be eligible for an Enhanced DBS check as they are involved in regulated activity.  Â
In terms of hairdressing, regulated activity is physically assisting an adult with washing and or care of the hair. Hairdressers in care settings may also offer advice and guidance to an adult on how to do the above activities.
This is only considered regulated activity if the hairdresser is offering care-based rather than cosmetic or beauty-based consultations.  Â
DBS Checks For Fitness Instructors Â
Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks are frequently carried out on potential employees by employers and, in the leisure industry, DBS checks are used for safeguarding the wellbeing of vulnerable individuals such as children.  Â
Do Fitness Instructors need a DBS check? Â Â
It will depend on your clients. If you are working directly with children or vulnerable adults, you will be required to undergo an Enhanced DBS check.  Â
An Enhanced DBS check will reveal any cautions, warnings, reprimands, or convictions as well as any other relevant information that may be held by local police.  Â
If you are solely working with adults that are not deemed to be vulnerable, you will not be eligible for an Enhanced DBS check. Â
If you are working as a sports coach or a fitness instructor that does not require you to work with vulnerable people, you will only be eligible for a Basic DBS check.  Â
How long does DBS take? Â
Applying for DBS checks for individuals in lifestyle businesses is quick and simple.  Â
Register in seconds and send check alerts directly to the applicant. They’ll be alerted instantly and can begin the check process straight away.
Don’t worry – if they’re busy and forget to start their check, we’ll send them a text reminder after 24 and 48 hours.  Â
When your employees upload their proof of identity, their reports will be returned within 5-10 days.   Â
