DBS Checks for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises
DBS checks for Tradespeople
Tradespeople help homes and businesses all over the UK to keep the lights on and ensure that we can live, work and play safely and securely. Tradespeople include trained professionals such as electricians, plumbers and bricklayers.Â
They often work in the public’s interests and work near the general public but is there ever a situation where a tradesman, tradesperson or construction worker would need a DBS check?Â
DBS Checks for Construction WorkersÂ
Generally speaking, construction workers do not require a DBS check to work on a typical building site. They would be removed from the general public, by default of working in a health and safety-controlled zone and they typically would not have access to or work with or near vulnerable people.
This would mean that construction workers working on general building and construction sites will not be eligible for Standard or Enhanced DBS checks. They will be eligible for a Basic DBS check, which they can run on themselves or an employer can request they undertake.Â
However, the requirements for a DBS for construction worker may change depending on the site they are working on. Construction workers and contractors working in schools, care homes and hospitals may be eligible and require a Standard or Enhanced DBS check. Â
DBS Checks for Contractors working in SchoolsÂ
If construction workers and contractors are working at or in a school frequently, it means that they are eligible for an Enhanced DBS Check. Frequent is considered as 3 or more times in a 30- day period.
Contractors and construction workers may or may not require a check of the Children’s Barred List – it depends on what activities they are undertaking. Â
Schools are accountable for safeguarding within their site and will advise of the level of DBS checks required before work starts.
Contractors may work over the summer holidays or when no children are present but a school may still request that Enhanced DBS checks are carried out, in case of overrunning works. Â
DBS Checks for Contractors Working in Hospitals, Hospices and ClinicsÂ
Contractors working on medical sites will require a Standard DBS check generally speaking. However, there may be circumstances where Enhanced DBS checks are required. Â
Working in a children’s hospital or hospice setting may require an Enhanced DBS check to be undertaken. There are some settings that may require a check of the Children’s Barred List. Â
DBS Checks for Contractors Working in Care HomesÂ
Contractors working on or in care homes will find it highly likely that they will need to undertake an Enhanced DBS Check. This will apply to care homes for both the elderly and for vulnerable adults with other needs.
In some circumstances, a check of the barred list may be required. The care setting should advise.   Â
DBS checks for Painter and Decorators
While painters and decorators have access to offices and homes where there may be vulnerable people and/or commercially sensitive information, they are not eligible for Standard or Enhanced DBS checks.
This is due to the fact that they are unlikely to have unsupervised contact with children and vulnerable adults, or the public in general. Any supervision of children in a domestic setting is the responsibility of parents and carers. Â
Painters and decorators are eligible for a Basic DBS check, which will show any unspent criminal convictions or conditional cautions and can be requested by an employer or self-requested. Â
